[After his morning practice and after lunch, Zuko makes a familiar trip to the library. He spends a lot of time in there, poking around. Today's topic is one near and dear and a little familiar. When he speaks, it's neutral. Just a question for the masses.]

"Honor isn't about making the right choices. It's about dealing with the consequences." [A pause.] It's a quote. Guess it's not really important who said it. I doubt many people would recognize the name anyway. Someone else said this: "Nobody can acquire honor by doing what is wrong."

These seem contradictory to anyone? [He'd really like to know, if only because... Well. Because he's curious. That's all. Really.]

[An interesting question that strikes a little close to home.

She's not sure if she should be answering questions like this so soon after getting here - it might out here as more serious than she'd initially like to be perceived, but...

...doesn't it seem like dealing with the consequences of your choice is about making the right choices? Like... a chance to start again, if you've done something wrong, or to keep doing right if you've done something right?

Making amends, sure. But how many bad choices do you get before making amends doesn't matter anymore?

Maybe it depends on the choice. Or how you want things to 'matter.' Just because other people's opinions of you might not change doesn't mean you should stop doing what you think needs to be done, does it?

No. I don't like to give much thought to what people think of me when I make the decisions I make. [Doesn't like to. Still does.]

Then making amends would still matter to you, wouldn't it?

It does. I'd rather not need to, though.

Yeah, me too. But... [And it's not the same, she knows it's not the same and she wishes she hadn't but... but...] are you really living if you don't make any mistakes?

Maybe. It's hard to learn -- really learn -- without them, I think.

Yeah, I think so. Sometimes you have to struggle through something in order to really understand it.

[ voice ]

Yeah. There's some things you have to learn by doing -- or messing up.

Mmm.
